RESEARCH- Patient / Participant Information
Through participation in research studies, at Maine Cardiology Associates we are able to provide you with the newest, most advanced therapies that may not be available in all hospitals or clinics. Based on our excellent reputation in our field, Maine Cardiology has been selected to participate in investigations that advance our knowledge and improve treatment for patients with heart disease.

Are there benefits to participating in a research study?
Many of the studies we participate in are supported by private industry or other grants. This allows participants to receive research related medication, diagnostic testing, and physician assessments at no cost. Other benefits include ongoing education as well as frequent contact with the research team. Sometimes patients are also paid for participation in research.

Are there risks involved in research studies?
Any treatment or test, even those widely used or accepted involves some level of risk. While the study provides newer treatments that might otherwise be unavailable, there is no guarantee that each and every patient will benefit from participating in a research study. All research conducted at Maine Cardiology Associates is approved by and overseen by an ethics committee known as an institutional review board or IRB. The IRB ensures that the rights of the participants are enforced and that the potential risks involved do not out-weigh the potential benefits.

How do I decide whether or not to participate in a research study?
Feel free to discuss research with your cardiologist or a member of our research staff. If you choose not to become involved in a research study, your care will not be affected in any way. Research participation is voluntary.
