Laboratory (blood) Tests
Your cardiologist sometimes relies on the results of tests performed on samples of your blood in
order to make diagnoses, follow progress of therapy, or detect side effects of medication.
Sometimes these tests may be performed through a local hospital and other times you may have blood
drawn in our office.
What is the purpose of laboratory (blood) tests?
Some of the reasons for obtaining a sample of your blood for testing include:
- To make a diagnosis
- To follow progress of treatment for a heart problem
- To detect side effects of medication or other treatments
Commonly performed tests include measurement of cholesterol levels, kidney function, liver
function, muscle enzymes and to follow anticoagulation (coumadin therapy).
What happens during a laboratory (blood) test?
A technician will clean your skin with an antiseptic. He/she will then place a strip or tube called
a tourniquet around your arm to make your veins enlarge. He/she will then use a syringe or test
tube with a vacuum attached to a small needle to collect blood from your vein. After, the
tourniquet is removed, pressure is applied for a moment over the puncture site and a bandage is
applied.
Will I feel any pain or discomfort during the test?
Everyone experiences blood draws differently. There is some discomfort, but it is brief. If you
have had trouble with blood tests in the past, you should alert the technician prior to the test so
that the technician can do everything possible to minimize side effects and discomfort of having
your blood drawn.
How long does the test take?
Typically, it only takes 5 minutes to have blood drawn. Most test results are available to your
cardiologist within a week. Some specialized tests take longer.
How do I get the results of my laboratory (blood) test?
After your cardiologist receives a report, a copy will be sent to your primary care physician. If
the test was ordered as part of your cardiologist's care, he/she typically will have told you
during your appointment whether you will have a follow-up appointment to discuss results or whether
you will receive a call or letter. Unless an appointment has been made for you, please call our
office if you have not received the results within 10 business days.
