Chest Pain

Chest pain can have many causes. But heart disease is so common (and dangerous) that chest pain should never be ignored.

The term “chest pain” is often used to describe pressure, choking, numbness, or other discomfort in your chest, neck, or upper abdomen and can be associated with pain in the jaw, head, or arms. It can last from a moment to days or weeks and can occur rarely or often, sporadically or regularly.

Remember that chest pain is merely a symptom, not a diagnosis. It can be a symptom of anything from a serious to a trivial medical problem, including:

  • Asthma
  • Heartburn
  • Bronchitis
  • Pneumonia
  • Peptic ulcer
  • Chest injury
  • Anxiety or panic disorder
  • Mitral valve prolapse
  • Coronary artery spasm
  • Coronary artery disease
  • Pericarditis
  • Heart attack
  • Aortic dissection

There is even a form of chest pain seen in young, healthy people called benign chest wall pain that has no known cause at all.

If you are experiencing chest pain, please see your doctor promptly.
